Tuuli from Toronto rocks CBGB!

Jeepers, Creepers, what a Saturday night it was! At CBGB's on June 19th, I had the pleasure of seeing former Detox Darlings bass player, Mohawking Kenny Lin, rockin' and rolling with his new band, the glam superstars known as Starr. What a bunch of pretty boys in pretty costumes. Red pleather jumpsuits complete with over-the-top energy. Simply fabulous. Lindsey, and her band the Kowalski's were really fun, and genuinely nice too. Uh oh. There goes the rough New York rock scene reputation. But best of all, I finally got to meet my cyber-pal, Jenny Vegas and her band Tuuli, in person. It was quite refreshing hanging out with three bands I could actually have decent conversations with.

Tuuli: Claire, Swain, and Jenny
Several months ago, while I was online visiting a bunch of band Web sites, I found this great female band called Tuuli from Toronto. I signed their guestbook and later received email from Jenny (singer and guitarist). I told Jenny that I had just left my band and worked as a freelance writer for a women's Web site called coolgrrrls.com (this was before I started with NY Rock). Coolgrrrls.com is a single girl's guide to music, the arts, and travel. I mentioned how most of the correspondents were either in bands or knowledgeable about rock'n'roll in their hometown. Within a few weeks, Jenny became the toronto@nite coolgrrrl.

I was particularly impressed with how Tuuli was awarded the title, "The band with the best snarls." Instead of a trophy, the girls were given a bottle of Jack Daniels as a prize. On Saturday night, I found the band a bit freaked out because their guitarist quit right before the show. Luckily, they found a last minute replacement. And she was just as beautiful and talented as the other ladies. After their set, the girls shared with me the "bliss of life" in Toronto. Cheap rent, cute boys, affordable health care, great bands and overall, high-quality life. Quickly, I asked if I could move there with them. Claire, the bassist offered me a place to stay. I walked out to Jenny's car where she proceeded to open her trunk and said, "Adena, we're leaving tomorrow at 3:00 p.m. There's plenty of room for your stuff if you really want to move." I was so excited over this news.

A few minutes later, Lindsey from the Kowalski's escorted us over to Coney Island High. Miss Guy was DJaying, and we wished each other a "Happy Birthday" (we're both Geminis). I informed Guy of my sudden change of residence. He looked at me as if I'd lost my mind, but appeared amused nonetheless. Toward the end of the night, I walked outside and bumped into legendary rapper, Lenny Disco. Len was kind enough to give me a ride back to Brooklyn. I told him about my decision, and he said he had already planned on giving me a male stripper for a belated birthday present. That changed everything! Needless to say, I've decided to stay in New York for a little while longer. Toronto has Tuuli and the Big Apple has me... for now anyway. Tomorrow, I might decide to go to London or maybe even Mars. Stay tuned boys and grrrls.
Until then,
Miss Adena
