Though not on tour or in the studio this month, Rolling Stones' guitarist Keith Richards isn't about to let any grass gather on his boot heels. As a surprise guest, he recently appeared at New York City's Chicago Blues during a show by seminal rock 'n' blues pianist Johnnie Johnson. Introduced by Johnson's guitarist as someone "who's never heard of you, but you've heard of him," Richards reeled and rocked through obscure barrel-house boogies like "Tanqueray" and old-time rockers like Chuck Berry's "Oh, Carol," which, incidentally, the Stones covered on their first album.

Johnson's skilled hands are no strangers to Berry tunes, having played with Chuck for many years since the 1950s. Legend has it that the tune "Johnny B. Good" was named for Johnson, who plays with the casual elegance that only natural talent and 40 years on the road can bring. Richards, not a bad musician himself, was all smiles as he took off his leather coat and agreed to stay awhile "as long as the drinks were free." After the show, Keith was promptly hustled out the back door. But for those in attendance, it was a night to remember and a rocking reminder to support the legends while they're still around.

New Yorkers can pay their respects again when Johnson returns to town November 9th as part of the W. C. Handy All Stars Tour performing at B.B. King's Blues Club in Times Square. Even without surprise guest stars, it's an impressive lineup featuring blues legends Little Milton, Duke Robillard, Charlie Musselwhite and Trudy Lynn. Will "Keef" show up again, or maybe an Eric with a "slowhand"? Like they say in the Fats Waller musical Aint Misbehaving, "One never knows, do one."
