Learning the Blues with B.B. King: B.B. King Live at B.B. King Blues Club, by Otto Luck

At B.B. King Blues Club, I truly learned what the blues are all about. It's hanging out in a hot, crowded standing-room-only section for an hour and a half, waiting for the show to start, after spending a long day at the office. "Barkeep! Another cold one here!" If I gotta suffer, I will not be doing it with a dry mouth! That's for sure....

Okay, show starts. Bunch of fellows in purple suits start playing a twelve-bar blues number. It's B.B.'s backup band. The music is good and I've managed to sleaze my way into a seat, but I'm still unnerved from spending 90 minutes sandwiched between a mass of bodies, while the rest of the crowd sits comfortably at their tables scoffing down bacon cheeseburgers and chicken wings. "Waitress! Get me some roast beef! Extra rare!"

Suddenly B.B. takes the stage. Damn, if he doesn't warm your heart within seconds. He's big; he's beautiful and the notes he chooses are like honey from a bee. Okay, he's older now, but no less bold. I'm surprised by his guitar tone, which is decidedly on the loud side and pretty heavy on the gain. Hey, I think I'm beginning to understand – B.B. is the Johnny Thunders of the blues. He ain't fast. He ain't even necessarily that slick. But he's definitely ballsy, and he's got that certain something that makes you feel good all over.

B.B. continues to woo the crowd. He tells a few good-hearted jokes, engages the audience in an obligatory sing-a-long, then rips into "Key to the Highway" and massive hit "The Thrill Is Gone." Suddenly all is well with the world. Waitress, cancel the beef. In fact, forget about food altogether. Bring me a nice cordial. Make it a brandy. Yeahhhh, that's a nice way to top off the evening. Life is so sweet sometimes, aint' it? Just like honey from a bee....
