The Marilyn Manson Book Signing: A Cold Night in Hell (NY Rock)
Score: 92
The media circus, that is, following in the wake of Marilyn Manson, who pretty much took New York over last month from Friday the 13th (naturally) onward. The Long Hard Road Out of Hell, written with New York Times and Rolling Stone scribe, Neil Strauss, also sets out to dispel these many Manson myths. Manson's hour-long appearance on Friday night's MTV Live was another interview-by-numbers, as he fielded cautiously-worded queries from the non-event host and a gaggle of awed Manson-ites who...
Marilyn Manson: Baby Eating Is Bad Influence, Our Teens Need Balanced Diets (NY Rock)
Score: 91
Marilyn Manson's legendary baby-eating transgressions seem to have grown into something far more widespread. In a recent interview with NY Rock, Marilyn summed up his take on the hysteria he seems to engender: "I do [things] in an extreme way, which provokes extreme reactions." In direct response to mounting public pressure, Manson has canceled his "Rock Is Dead" tour in the States and instead, is planning to spend his summer vacation in Europe, where he and band will continue to perform.

Flop of the Year: MTV Video Music Awards (NY Rock)
Score: 81
It was apparent, however, that the laughable MTV Video Music Awards on September 10th, which soaked in the smog-thickened air of Los Angeles, desperately lacked the intensity and character of NYC, among other things. Maybe it was Mayor Giuliani's bullying of awards shows (the Grammys have also jumped town this year to head to Hollywood) or maybe MTV was looking to expand its California enterprise. Whatever the reason, the awards hit the Universal Ampitheater with Ben Stiller in the driver's...
Neil Young: Still Crazy Horse After All These Years (NY Rock)
Score: 77
Busier than a politician on the election trail, he divided his '97 year amongst the H.O.R.D.E. tour, another Crazy Horse live album, and a starring role in the Jim Jarmusch-directed rockumentary, Year of the Horse. Year Of The Horse demonstrates just how seriously possessed Crazy Horse is when it comes to the pursuit of amp-cranking Nirvana. Listen up and you'll understand just what Young meant when he declared some time back that "Crazy Horse plays big so I can play huge."
NY Rock Editorial: Gabriella on Pete Townshend and Blackie Lawless
Score: 77
It is in response to musician Blackie Lawless's press release (below) in support of Townshend. As for Lawless's accusation that Townshend's friends didn't stand up for him, I think Sir Elton's comment "I hope it is not true" is standing up for him, or is Mr. Lawless advocating to support child abuse when the abuser is a friend? Fact is, Pete Townshend admitted that he looked at child pornograhpy.
