'99 Grammy Nominations: Anyone Have a Painkiller? (NY Rock)
Score: 85
On Tuesday, January 5, 1999, journalists of all shapes, sizes and nationalities gathered to hear the announcements of the Grammy Award nominees at the China Club in New York City. The song comes off of McLachlan's 1997 Surfacing, which was nominated for and won several awards at last year's Grammys. The Globe Sessions was surely a strong album for Crow, but does it represent a step forward for music; something that the album of the year should?

Basically, this writer boycotted the College Music Journal (CMJ) music festival that took place in New York City from October 30th through November 2nd. Meanwhile, many of the hot indie bands that played the big venues were New York bands (Radio 4, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Northern State, The Walkmen, French Kicks). Local fellas Shannon Ferguson (guitar), Mike James (drums), Dave Marchese (bass) and Steve Schiltz (guitar, vocals) craft melancholy rock songs like a baby Radiohead.

The man behind Rock N Roll Fag Bar, The Black Party, and (NY Rock's personal favorite) Homocorps got one last chance to throw that infamous soiree between the walls of CBGB. Hosted by that sassy fucker Formika, the night lit up with the band Celebutard, featuring local loco Lola Rock N Rolla and her shiny saxophona and ex-Lunachicks drummer Becky Wreck. The same Jane Friedman who suggested to Hilly Kristal that Patti Smith's band play a gig with Television at CBGB, thereby, planting the ...
