Keith Richards Shut Out of London Pub It's Not What You Think
May 5, 2000 Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards found himself locked out of a pub when he turned up to pay tribute to his bodyguard.
The craggy rocker was trying to get into the Half Moon public house in Putney, London, where a wake was being held for his personal bodyguard Joe Seabrook on Wednesday night, May 3, 2000. But the star found the doors locked and had to wait half-an-hour before a doorman arrived.
Landlord James Harris says, "He was banging on the doors but we weren't there to let him in. In the end a security guard let him in. Keith was the first one through the door."
The South London pub was chosen as one of the Stones' earliest '60s venues. Seabrook was Richards' bodyguard for 26 years. He died four weeks ago and the wake was held on what would have been his
59th birthday.
Ronnie Wood, Charlie Watts and Mick Jagger also turned up to the private gig. Harris adds, "Mick was a bit surly but Ronnie and Keith were party animals as usual. They got up on stage and jammed with the band."
Among the other famous faces in the crowd were Hugh Cornwell from the Stranglers and Bruce Watson from Big Country.
